IndianOil's sprawling R&D Centre at Faridabad, one of Asia's finest in downstream petroleum R&D, offers competitive advantage to the Corporation through world-class technology and process solutions and innovative products. With more than four decades of pioneering work in lubricants formulation, refinery processes and pipeline transportation, the Centre has crossed the 1,000-patents milestone in year 2019-20. (It currently holds 1054 active patents, of which 718 are international patents as on 30th September 2020).

The vibrant research undertaken by the Centre is showcased by IndianOil's SERVO® product line, with over 5,000 lubricant & grease formulations to suit all conceivable automotive and industrial applications. The Centre has also developed several in-house refinery process technologies and catalysts specially suited to refinery operations in India. Its alternative energy programmes include bio-energy, solar energy, Hydrogen energy, H-CNG blends, synthetic fuels and shale oil. The Centre is also focusing on cutting-edge research in the areas of nanotechnology, petrochemicals & polymers, multi-feed (coal, pet coke & biomass, etc.) gasification/liquefaction, and gas-to-liquid technologies.

A 4.17 million tonnes per annum unit based on IndianOil's flagship INDMAX technology has been commissioned at Paradip Refinery. INDMAX enables conversion of petroleum residues into more valuable LPG, light distillates and petrochemical feedstock. Besides, INDAdeptG technology is being implemented at Guwahati Refinery to produce gasoline conforming to BS-IV norms. The Centre also developed several process technologies like indeDiesel, indSelect, OCTAMAX, AmyleMax etc., to facilitate BS-VI compliance. Indane Nanocut, a hi-therm LPG-based metal-cutting gas developed by IndianOil, and is being supplied pan-India.
